Helen Battle
Dr. Helen Battle was a pioneering figure in Canadian marine biology, remembered for her significant contributions to the field of fish embryology and her innovative approaches to research. Starting as a student at Western University of London Ontario in the 1920s, she became the first woman in Canada to earn a Ph.D. in Marine Biology from the University of Toronto. She later returned to Western, where she made significant strides in research, teaching, and leadership.
Throughout her career, Battle was recognized not only for her scientific accomplishments but also for her dedication to teaching, mentoring thousands of students and leaving a lasting impact on many.

In memory of Dr. Helen Battle's incredible contributions to the field of biology and her passion for teaching, we host a bi-annual lecture. These lectures invite different biologists and researchers from to present their groundbreaking research to a diverse audience. The objective is to inspire and foster a love for biology in everyone, from students and professionals to the general public. ​
